Exposition
The psalmist looks beyond earthly sources to the Creator of all things. Help comes not from the mountains themselves but from the Lord who made them.
Historical Setting
This 'Song of Ascents' was sung by Jewish pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for annual festivals. The journey through hilly terrain was dangerous—bandits, wild animals, and extreme weather threatened travelers. Looking to the hills, the pilgrim declares that help comes not from the mountains themselves but from the Lord who made them.
Original Language Notes
'Ezri' means my help—from 'ezer' (help, aid, support). This is the same word used for Eve as Adam's 'helper' (ezer, Genesis 2:18) and for God as Israel's help throughout the Psalms. It describes vital, life-sustaining assistance from one who is perfectly capable.
Pastoral Application
When seeking help, look to God first. He who created the universe is capable of handling any situation you face. Lift your eyes above your circumstances to your Helper.
