Exposition
Solomon describes God's name—His character and nature—as a fortified tower of safety. The righteous find refuge by running to God Himself.
Historical Setting
Solomon wrote this around 950 BC. Ancient cities were protected by watchtowers—the tallest, strongest structure where citizens fled during attack. Solomon contrasts God's name as a 'strong tower' with verse 11, where the rich man's wealth is his 'strong city'—only in his imagination. True security is found in God, not material resources.
Original Language Notes
'Migdal' means tower—a fortified defensive structure. 'Oz' means strength or might. A 'migdal-oz' was the strongest point in a city's defense, the last refuge when walls were breached. God's name (His character and nature) is the ultimate unbreachable fortress.
Pastoral Application
When danger or difficulty comes, run to God. His name represents all that He is: powerful, faithful, loving. In Him, you find true safety.
