Historical Context
Paul wrote this around AD 60-62 from Roman imprisonment, where he was literally chained to Roman soldiers. The armor metaphor would have been vivid—Paul could see Roman military equipment daily. Each piece of armor corresponds to a spiritual truth: belt (truth), breastplate (righteousness), shoes (gospel readiness), shield (faith), helmet (salvation), sword (Word of God).
Original Language
'Panoplia' means full armor or complete suit of armor—combining 'pan' (all) and 'hopla' (weapons). It's the root of English 'panoply.' Paul insists on the WHOLE armor—partial equipment leaves vulnerabilities. Every piece is essential for spiritual defense.
