What the Bible says about stewardship
A steward in Scripture manages what belongs to someone else. 'The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof' (Psalm 24:1) settles the ownership question before any budget is discussed. 1 Corinthians 4:2 sets the single job requirement: 'it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.' Not successful, not impressive — faithful with another's property.
Talents, time, and gifts
The parable of the talents (Matthew 25) applies the principle beyond money: the servants are judged on what they did with unequal amounts, and the condemned one simply buried his. Ephesians 5:16 speaks of redeeming the time. 1 Peter 4:10 calls every believer a steward of grace received. Luke 16:10 states the rule most people miss: 'He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.'
