    Philippians 4:13

Sermon on Philippians 4:13: I Can Do All Things Through Christ

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

    Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

    Big Idea

Christ is sufficient for every season — abundance or want, plenty or pain — because His strength, not our circumstance, is the source of contentment.

    Context

Paul writes from a Roman prison. The verse is the climax of a paragraph (vv. 10–13) about learning contentment in any state. It is not a verse about athletic achievement; it is a verse about endurance.

    Expository Outline (verse-by-verse)

    1. Contentment Is Learned, Not Innate (v. 10–12)

    • 'I have learned' — twice. Contentment is a school, not a switch.
    • Paul's curriculum: 'how to be abased and how to abound.'
    • Both want and plenty test the soul; both are teachers.

    2. The Secret Is Not Self (v. 13a)

    • 'I can' — but only because of 'through Christ.'
    • Not positive thinking; not personal grit.
    • Self-help and Philippians 4:13 are at war with each other.

    3. The Strength Is Christ Himself (v. 13b)

    • 'Through Christ which strengtheneth me' — present-tense, ongoing supply.
    • His strength is given as it is needed, not stockpiled in advance.
    • Paul has just listed weakness; this is how he survives it.

    Topical Outline (one big idea)

    1. How Philippians 4:13 Is Often Misused

    • Treated as a magic formula for athletic or career success.
    • Detached from its prison-cell context.
    • Shrunk into a self-confidence verse instead of a Christ-confidence verse.

    2. What 'All Things' Really Means

    • All things God has actually called me to.
    • All things in both extremes — hunger and abundance.
    • All things I face, not all things I dream.

    Cross-references

    • 2 Corinthians 12:9My grace is sufficient — strength made perfect in weakness.
    • Isaiah 40:29-31He giveth power to the faint.
    • Ephesians 6:10Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.
    • Colossians 1:11Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power.
    • 1 Timothy 1:12Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me.

    Illustrations

    • "A child cannot lift the couch — but a child holding his father's hand while the father lifts the couch can honestly say, 'I did it.'"
    • "Paul writing 'I can do all things' while chained to a Roman guard reframes the verse forever. It is not a victory verse from a mountaintop; it is a sufficiency verse from a dungeon."
    • "Eric Liddell could run, and could also be imprisoned in a Japanese camp. Both seasons were 'all things' lived 'through Christ.'"

    Application questions

    1. Are you currently in a season of want or a season of plenty — and have you let Christ teach you in that season?
    2. Where have you been pulling on your own strength when Christ's strength was on offer?
    3. What 'all thing' is God calling you to that you have called impossible?

    Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, we confess we have wanted Your blessings more than Your strength. Teach us, in every season, that You are enough. Strengthen us today for the next step You have actually called us to. Amen.
