    Psalm 96:1-3 – Meaning & Devotional

    "O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people."

    What This Verse Means

    Psalm 96 is an exuberant call to worship that extends beyond Israel to 'all the earth.' The command to sing a 'new song' suggests that God's mercies are so fresh and abundant that old songs cannot contain them. Each day brings new reasons for praise.

    The psalm also carries a missionary mandate: 'Declare his glory among the heathen.' Worship is not meant to be kept private. The believer's praise becomes a testimony that draws others to know God's salvation and wonders.

    Historical Context

    This psalm is nearly identical to the song David composed when the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 16:23-33). It was likely used in temple worship as a hymn of universal praise, anticipating the day when all nations would worship the God of Israel.
