    Matthew 6:19-21 – Meaning & Devotional

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

    — Matthew 6:19-21 (KJV)

    What This Verse Means

Jesus doesn't prohibit saving or financial planning — He warns against making earthly wealth your primary investment. Everything on earth is vulnerable: moth destroys clothing, rust corrodes metal, and thieves steal possessions. No earthly treasure is truly secure.

Heavenly treasure, by contrast, is imperishable. It's accumulated through generosity, obedience, and faithful service. The diagnostic verse is 21: your heart follows your treasure. Where you invest your resources reveals — and shapes — what you truly love.

    Historical Context

In Jesus' day, wealth was often stored in fine garments (vulnerable to moths), precious metals (vulnerable to rust/corrosion), and coins hidden in walls (vulnerable to thieves who literally "dug through" mud-brick walls). Jesus used everyday financial realities to teach eternal principles.

Increase your investment in eternal things: giving to those in need, supporting gospel work, investing time in relationships and discipleship. Redirect your treasure and your heart will follow.

Lord, shift my heart from earthly treasures to heavenly ones. Help me invest in what lasts forever — generosity, obedience, and love. Where my treasure is, let my heart follow You. Amen.
