1 Samuel 16:7 – Meaning & Devotional
"For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."
What This Verse Means
God's evaluation criteria are fundamentally different from the world's. While humans judge by external factors — appearance, status, credentials — God looks at the heart. What matters to Him is internal character, not outward presentation.
This is both comforting and challenging: comforting because God sees your genuine heart, challenging because you can't fool Him with outward performance.
Historical Context
God sent Samuel to anoint a new king from Jesse's sons. When the tall, impressive Eliab appeared, Samuel assumed he was God's choice. God corrected him: outward appearance doesn't determine divine selection. The youngest, David, was God's choice.
How to Apply This Today
Focus on developing your heart rather than your image. God isn't impressed by outward performance — He values sincerity, humility, and genuine devotion within.
