John 8:12 – Meaning & Devotional
"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
What This Verse Means
Jesus declares Himself the light that illuminates all of life. Following Him means we never have to stumble in spiritual darkness — His truth guides, His grace illuminates, His presence dispels fear.
Darkness represents ignorance, sin, and death. Light represents truth, holiness, and life. By following Jesus, we move out of one realm and into the other.
Historical Context
Jesus likely spoke this during the Feast of Tabernacles, when massive candelabras were lit in the temple court, illuminating all of Jerusalem. Against this backdrop, Jesus claimed to be the true light of the entire world.
How to Apply This Today
Follow Jesus closely so you walk in His light. Read His Word, obey His commands, and stay near Him. The closer you follow, the brighter your path becomes.
