1 John 4:18 – Meaning & Devotional
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
What This Verse Means
Love and fear cannot coexist at full strength. As God's perfect love grows in us, it actively expels fear. Fear brings torment — it's a form of internal punishment — but love brings freedom.
This doesn't mean mature Christians never feel afraid, but that growing in God's love progressively diminishes fear's grip. The more loved you feel by God, the less you fear.
Historical Context
John wrote to combat false teachings and reassure believers of God's love. In a context where fear of judgment and persecution was real, John assures them that God's love is the ultimate answer to every fear.
How to Apply This Today
When fear grips you, don't fight it with willpower — fight it with love. Meditate on how completely God loves you. Let His perfect love displace your deepest fears.
