Ephesians 2:10 – Meaning & Devotional
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
What This Verse Means
After establishing that salvation is by grace through faith (vv. 8-9), Paul reveals the purpose of salvation: good works. We are God's workmanship — His masterpiece, His poem (the Greek word is poiema, from which we get 'poem'). We are created in Christ for specific good works that God prepared in advance.
This verse beautifully balances grace and works: we are not saved BY works but FOR works. God designed specific assignments for each of us before we were even born. Our lives have purpose — divinely crafted, individually tailored purpose.
Historical Context
Paul wrote to the Ephesian church, which included both Jews and Gentiles. After showing that both groups are saved by grace alone, he united them in a common purpose: the good works God prepared for them. This gave dignity and direction to every believer regardless of background.
How to Apply This Today
You are God's masterpiece, created for a unique purpose. Discover the good works He has prepared for you — they are already laid out, waiting for you to walk in them. Live with purpose, knowing your life is designed by the Master Craftsman.
