Philippians 3:14 – Meaning & Devotional
"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
What This Verse Means
Paul uses athletic imagery — pressing toward a finish line — to describe the Christian life. The 'mark' is the goal; the 'prize' is Christ's approval; the 'high calling' is the upward call of God. Paul is not coasting — he's straining forward.
The previous verse reveals his secret: forgetting what's behind and reaching for what's ahead. Past failures and past successes are both released so that forward momentum is unhindered.
Historical Context
Paul wrote this from prison, yet his language is full of energy and forward motion. Despite chains, he was spiritually sprinting. His impressive credentials (verse 4-6) and painful losses (verse 8) were both counted as nothing compared to knowing Christ.
How to Apply This Today
Stop looking backward — at your failures or your glory days. Press forward toward the calling God has placed on your life. Run with focus and intensity. The prize is worth every effort.
