Ephesians 1:7 – Meaning & Devotional
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."
What This Verse Means
Redemption means being bought back from slavery — and the price was Christ's blood. Forgiveness of sins is not based on our merit but measured 'according to the riches of His grace.' Grace is the currency.
The word 'riches' implies abundance. God doesn't forgive reluctantly or sparingly — He pours out grace from inexhaustible wealth. Our sin debt, however large, is covered by His greater grace.
Historical Context
Paul begins Ephesians with a sweeping celebration of spiritual blessings in Christ. Redemption through blood echoed both the Exodus Passover and the Roman slave market — imagery familiar to his diverse audience.
How to Apply This Today
Accept that your redemption is fully paid — not by your effort but by Christ's blood. Live in the freedom that the riches of God's grace provide, not under the burden of earning forgiveness.
