    Demons — Overview

What Are Demons in the Bible?

Demons are fallen, evil spirits under Satan who oppose God and oppress people — but they are subject to Christ.

What Are Demons in the Bible?

The New Testament uses 'devils' (Greek daimonion) over 60 times. They are unclean, intelligent, malevolent spirits. They believe in God and tremble (James 2:19), recognize Christ's deity (Mark 1:24), and are utterly subject to His word (Mark 1:27). Every recorded encounter between Jesus and demons ends with the demons defeated.

    What Scripture Teaches

    • 1Demons are real, personal spiritual beings (Luke 8:30)
    • 2They oppose God and oppress people (Matthew 12:43-45)
    • 3They recognize Christ's authority (Mark 1:24)
    • 4They tremble at God's holiness (James 2:19)
    • 5They cannot harm a believer without God's permission (Job 1-2)
    • 6Christ disarmed them at the cross (Colossians 2:15)

    Key KJV Scriptures

"Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."
"And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him."
"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."

    Why It Matters

The Bible takes demons seriously without giving them ultimate power. They are dangerous but defeated — real enemies whose head has been crushed by the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15).

    Application for Today

Don't ignore the spiritual realm; don't obsess over it. The believer's safety is in Christ, not in formulas. Resist the devil and he will flee (James 4:7).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Christian be possessed by a demon?

A Spirit-indwelt believer cannot be owned or possessed by a demon — 1 John 4:4 and 1 Corinthians 6:19 settle that. Believers can, however, be tempted, harassed, or oppressed and must resist by Christ's authority.

How do you cast out a demon?

In Scripture, deliverance always happens by Christ's authority through prayer (Mark 9:29), never by ritual or formula. Today, deliverance ministry should be done humbly, biblically, and usually in the context of a local church.
