    Editor’s reflection

The queen who said no — and lost a crown over one refusal.

Vashti is Persian, not Hebrew, and is usually connected to vahišta, 'best' or 'excellent,' or to a word for 'beautiful.' The Hebrew text keeps the foreign name as it stands, which is one of several signs that Esther is written by someone who knew the Persian court.

She is queen to Ahasuerus, and on the seventh day of a half-year of feasting, 'when the heart of the king was merry with wine,' he commands his eunuchs to bring her before the princes 'to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on' (Esther 1:10-11). She refuses. The text gives no reason, and the silence has kept commentators busy for two thousand years.

The consequences are immediate and out of all proportion. Memucan warns that every wife in the empire will hear of it, and a decree goes out that Vashti come no more before the king. The vacancy is what brings Esther into the palace, and the book's whole deliverance turns on it.

Modern readers often make Vashti a heroine and Esther a compromiser, or the reverse. The text does neither — it simply records that a woman refused to be displayed, and that God's purposes ran through the wreckage. As a given name Vashti has quiet use in the American South and the Caribbean.

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth.
