Esther 1 Summary
King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) of Persia hosts a lavish 180-day feast. On the final day, drunk with wine, he commands Queen Vashti to display her beauty before his guests. Vashti refuses, and the king's advisors convince him to depose her, fearing her defiance will inspire other wives to disobey their husbands.
Though God is never mentioned in Esther, His providence is evident from the first chapter. Vashti's removal creates the vacancy that will bring Esther to the throne—positioning her to save the Jewish people.
