Editor’s reflection
A Greek convert Paul refused to circumcise — and left in Crete to finish the work.
Titus is a Roman praenomen of uncertain origin; the usual suggestions are a root meaning 'honoured' or a link to the Sabine word for a dove. Unlike most Bible names it carries no Hebrew meaning at all — Titus is a Gentile through and through, and that is the point of his story.
Paul takes him to the council at Jerusalem as a test case: 'neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised' (Galatians 2:3). The refusal is deliberate. Titus standing there uncircumcised is the argument that Gentiles come into the church by faith, not by the law.
He becomes Paul's troubleshooter — sent to Corinth in the middle of the hardest conflict Paul had with any church, and his return with good news is the relief behind 2 Corinthians 7:6-7. The letter to Titus finds him 'in Crete... to set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city' (Titus 1:5).
As a given name Titus is short, unmistakably classical, and has been climbing steadily in English-speaking countries as parents look past the most-used New Testament names.
“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting.”
