Shiloh Meaning in the Bible

Shiloh (שִׁילֹה) is a place before it is a person. After the conquest, 'the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there' (Joshua 18:1). It remained the central sanctuary for roughly three hundred years — the place Hannah prayed for Samuel, where Eli sat by the door post, and where the boy Samuel heard his name called in the night.

The name's meaning is genuinely debated. Proposals include 'tranquil place' (from shalah, 'to be at rest'), 'his gift,' and — in the ancient versions — 'he to whom it belongs,' reading shelloh. That last reading matters because of Genesis 49:10: 'The sceptre shall not depart from Judah... until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.' Both Jewish and Christian interpreters have read this messianically for well over two thousand years.

Shiloh also carries a warning. When Israel treated the ark as a lucky charm it was captured, and Shiloh was destroyed; Jeremiah later uses it as the standing example of a sanctuary God abandoned: 'Go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh... and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel' (Jeremiah 7:12). A name that means rest is attached in Scripture to a place that lost it — which is a more serious thing to name a child than most 'peace' names.

As a given name Shiloh is thoroughly unisex, was popularised in the US after 2006, and reads as gentle rather than heavy despite its history. It pairs well with single-syllable middle names and needs no nickname.
