Lois Meaning in the Bible

Lois (Λωΐς) is Greek, and its origin is genuinely uncertain. The most frequently cited proposals are 'more desirable' or 'better,' from a comparative form related to lōion, though no derivation is secure. It was a real name in Asia Minor before the New Testament used it, and Paul's single mention is its most famous appearance in any literature.

That mention is 2 Timothy 1:5: 'the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.' The word translated 'unfeigned' is anypokritos — literally 'un-hypocritical,' without a stage mask. Paul is not praising intensity but authenticity, and he traces it backward two generations to a woman he almost certainly knew personally from his time in Lystra.

There is a quiet structural point here. The New Testament repeatedly credits the formation of its leaders to households rather than institutions. Timothy pastored Ephesus; Paul attributes the root of that ministry to his grandmother's faith, not to his training under Paul.

Lois was extremely popular in the English-speaking world from the 1920s to the 1940s — helped considerably by Lois Lane's debut in 1938 — and then fell almost entirely out of use. It is now due for the same vintage revival that has already reclaimed Hazel, Pearl, and Mabel, and it carries a scriptural warrant most of those names lack.
