Eunice Meaning in the Bible

Eunice is Greek — Eunikē (Εὐνίκη), from eu, 'good, well,' and nikē, 'victory': 'good victory.' The same nikē element sits inside Nicholas, Berenice, and Veronica. It was a real Hellenistic name in circulation well before the New Testament used it.

Scripture names her once, in 2 Timothy 1:5, and the sentence is unusually specific: 'the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.' Three generations of faith are traced through two women. Acts 16:1 adds that she was 'a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek' — meaning Timothy grew up in a religiously divided home.

Paul then tells Timothy why it mattered: 'from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation' (2 Timothy 3:15). Timothy's theological formation, which produced one of Paul's closest co-workers and the recipient of two canonical letters, is credited in the text to his mother's ordinary, sustained teaching at home.

Eunice peaked in English-speaking use in the early twentieth century and is currently rare enough to feel unclaimed, though it remains common in Kenya, Nigeria, and among Korean Christian families.
