Leopold Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Leopold is Germanic, from Liutbald: liut, 'people,' and bald, 'bold' or 'brave' — 'bold among the people.' The widespread claim that it means 'brave lion' comes from the medieval Latin form Leopoldus, where scribes reshaped the first element to look like leo, 'lion.' It is a genuine historical alteration, but it is not the original meaning.

The name belongs to Saint Leopold III, the twelfth-century Margrave of Austria, remembered for founding monasteries at Klosterneuburg and Heiligenkreuz and for declining the imperial crown. He was canonised in 1485 and is the patron saint of Austria, which is why Leopold became an Austrian and Belgian royal name for centuries afterwards.

It is not a biblical name and has no Hebrew or Greek root. Where lion imagery is what draws people, Scripture supplies it directly: Judah is 'a lion's whelp' (Genesis 49:9), and Revelation 5:5 names Christ 'the Lion of the tribe of Juda.' Ariel — 'lion of God' — is the Hebrew name that actually carries the meaning.

In modern English Leopold reads antique and grand, with Leo as the ready short form — which conveniently gives families the lion after all, since Leo genuinely is the Latin for lion.
