Judson Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Judson is an English patronymic surname meaning 'son of Judd,' and Judd is a medieval pet form of Jordan — a name given to children baptised with water brought back from the river Jordan by returning crusaders. So the chain runs Judson → Judd → Jordan → the Hebrew Yarden, 'the descender,' the river that runs down from Hermon to the Dead Sea.

That makes the underlying meaning biblical at two removes, which is more than most surname-names can claim. The Jordan is where Israel crossed into the land (Joshua 3), where Naaman washed seven times (2 Kings 5:14), and where Jesus was baptised by John (Matthew 3:13).

Judson's real standing among Christians comes from one man. Adoniram Judson sailed from Massachusetts in 1812 as one of the first American overseas missionaries, changed his convictions on baptism during the voyage, and spent nearly forty years in Burma. He was imprisoned for seventeen months during the Anglo-Burmese war, lost two wives and several children to disease, and completed a translation of the whole Bible into Burmese that is still in use. His first convert came after six years.

That is why Judson appears on Christian name lists: not scriptural derivation, but a life. It is used almost entirely in the United States, and Jud is the short form.
