What does Balak mean in the Bible?

Balak means "Devastator; Waster; One who lays waste" and is a name of Hebrew origin. Below is what Scripture and Christian tradition attach to that meaning.

Balak means "devastator" or "one who lays waste" in Hebrew. He was the king of Moab who hired the prophet Balaam to curse Israel — setting in motion one of the Bible's most dramatic confrontations between human scheming and divine sovereignty.

When Balak saw the vast Israelite camp approaching his borders, he was terrified: "Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many." Rather than fight, he chose supernatural warfare — hiring the most famous prophet-for-hire in the ancient world to curse Israel into defeat.

Three times Balak set up altars on strategic hilltops overlooking the Israelite camp, and three times Balaam's intended curses became blessings. Balak's frustration mounted with each failed attempt: "I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them these three times." He clapped his hands in anger and sent Balaam away.

Yet Balak's strategy ultimately succeeded through different means. Following Balaam's counsel, Moabite women seduced Israelite men into idolatry at Baal-peor — accomplishing through seduction what curses could not achieve. Revelation 2:14 references "the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel."
