Hosea

Hosea prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel during its final, turbulent decades before the Assyrian conquest. God gave him an unusual command: "Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms... for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord."

Hosea married Gomer, who bore him three children with symbolic names: Jezreel (God scatters), Lo-ruhamah (not pitied), and Lo-ammi (not my people). These names declared God's coming judgment on Israel. Yet the prophecy didn't end there—God promised to restore His people, changing "not pitied" to "having obtained mercy" and "not my people" to "sons of the living God."

Gomer eventually abandoned Hosea and fell into slavery, perhaps selling herself to pay debts. God then commanded Hosea to buy her back: "Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel." Hosea redeemed Gomer and committed to restore her.

This painful personal experience fueled Hosea's passionate prophecy. His writings overflow with God's anguished love: "How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel?... mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together." Hosea's message declares that God's love pursues His unfaithful people and offers redemption.
