Blessing
בְּרָכָה (Berakah)
God's favor, empowerment, and good gifts spoken or bestowed upon His people
A blessing (berakah) is God's spoken favor that empowers and enriches. To bless is to confer divine goodness — God blesses humanity, humanity blesses God (through praise), and believers bless one another.
"The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace." — Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)

The Power of Berakah
In Hebrew thought, a blessing was not a vague wish but a powerful word that carried creative force. When God blessed creation, things flourished. When Isaac blessed Jacob, the blessing could not be revoked. The Hebrew 'berakah' involves both the act of blessing (speaking favor) and the content of blessing (the good things conferred). God's blessings include both material provision and spiritual enrichment — and always flow from His covenant love.
Blessed to Be a Blessing
God's pattern of blessing is never self-contained. When God blessed Abraham, He immediately added, 'thou shalt be a blessing' (Genesis 12:2). Divine blessings are designed to flow through us to others. We are channels, not reservoirs. The Aaronic blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) — the LORD bless thee, keep thee, shine upon thee, be gracious, give thee peace — is God's comprehensive goodness spoken over His people, intended to overflow into the world.
Blessing God
Remarkably, the Bible also speaks of humans 'blessing' God: 'Bless the LORD, O my soul' (Psalm 103:1). Obviously, we cannot add to God's greatness. To 'bless God' means to acknowledge His goodness, to praise His character, and to declare His worth. It is the appropriate human response to divine blessing — receiving God's gifts and returning gratitude, honor, and worship.
Spiritual Blessings in Christ
Paul declares that God 'hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ' (Ephesians 1:3). In Christ, believers have already received every spiritual blessing: election, adoption, redemption, forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and an eternal inheritance. These are not future hopes but present realities — blessings already deposited in the believer's account through union with Christ.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Aaronic blessing?
The Aaronic blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) is the blessing God commanded Aaron and the priests to speak over Israel: 'The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.' It is one of the most beloved passages in the Bible and is still used in worship today.
Does God promise material blessings to believers?
God does promise to provide for His people's needs (Matthew 6:33, Philippians 4:19). However, the Bible does not guarantee material wealth as a sign of faith. Some of the most faithful believers suffered materially (Hebrews 11:36-38). The New Testament emphasizes spiritual blessings — peace, joy, hope, eternal life — as the primary riches of the Christian life.
Can a person lose God's blessing?
While God's love is unconditional, Scripture shows that disobedience can hinder the experience of God's blessing. Deuteronomy 28 outlines blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. However, in Christ, believers are under grace rather than law, and nothing can separate them from God's love (Romans 8:38-39).

God's favor, empowerment, and good gifts spoken or bestowed upon His people. The underlying Hebrew word is בְּרָכָה (Berakah) ("beh-rah-KAH"). A blessing (berakah) is God's spoken favor that empowers and enriches.
