What "What Is the Trinity?" Actually Means
The word 'Trinity' does not appear in the Bible, but the concept is woven throughout Scripture. At Jesus' baptism, all three persons are present: the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). Jesus commanded baptism 'in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost' (Matthew 28:19) — one name, three persons. The doctrine holds that God is one in essence but three in person. Each person is fully God: the Father is God (1 Corinthians 8:6), the Son is God (John 1:1), and the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4). Yet there are not three Gods but one (Deuteronomy 6:4). The three persons are distinct — the Father sends the Son, the Son sends the Spirit, and the Spirit glorifies the Son. This is not a contradiction but a mystery that reflects the infinite nature of God. The Trinity is essential to salvation: the Father plans it, the Son accomplishes it, and the Spirit applies it to believers' hearts.
