The bema (Greek for 'judgment seat') was the raised platform in ancient cities where officials sat to render verdicts and where athletic judges awarded prizes. Paul borrows this image to describe a coming day when 'we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ' (2 Corinthians 5:10). This judgment is for believers only, and it is not about salvation — that was settled at the cross. It concerns rewards for faithful service.
