What "What Is the Bema Seat Judgment?" Actually Means
The bema (Greek for 'judgment seat') was the raised platform in ancient cities where officials sat to render verdicts and where athletic judges awarded prizes. Paul borrows this image to describe a coming day when 'we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ' (2 Corinthians 5:10). This judgment is for believers only, and it is not about salvation — that was settled at the cross. It concerns rewards for faithful service. Every believer's works will be tested as by fire: 'Every man's work shall be made manifest... the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is' (1 Corinthians 3:13). Gold, silver, and precious stones — works done in Christ — will endure. Wood, hay, and stubble will burn. Some will receive a full reward; others will be saved 'yet so as by fire.' The bema is a powerful motivation for holy, fruitful living.
