The Biblical Context

Limited atonement, also known as particular redemption, is the doctrine that Jesus Christ died specifically for the elect, and that His sacrifice actually accomplished the salvation of those for whom He died. Rather than merely making salvation possible for everyone in a general sense, the Bible teaches that Christ's death was a definite purchase of a specific people. In John 10:14-15, Jesus says, 'I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep... and I lay down my life for the sheep.' This indicates a particular relationship and a specific focus of His sacrificial work upon those the Father had given Him. This is echoed in Matthew 1:21, where the angel tells Joseph that Mary shall bring forth a son, and 'thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.' The scope of the 'saving' is defined as 'his people.' Furthermore, Revelation 5:9 presents a heavenly vision of the redeemed singing, 'for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.' This shows that while the atonement is sufficient for all, it is efficiently applied to the elect from every corner of the earth. Limited atonement does not limit the power of Christ's blood, which is of infinite value, but it defines the intent of God to save a specific bride for His Son. This truth ensures that Christ did not die in vain for anyone, but successfully secured the redemption of all He intended to save.
