The Biblical Answer
Angelology is the doctrine of angels — the study of these created spirit beings who serve God and minister to His people. The word 'angel' comes from the Greek angelos and Hebrew malak, both meaning 'messenger.' Angels are not divine but created beings. Colossians 1:16 says that by Christ 'were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible.' Angels are spiritual beings without physical bodies, though they can appear in bodily form when God sends them on earthly missions. Angels are numerous. Hebrews 12:22 speaks of 'an innumerable company of angels.' Daniel 7:10 describes 'ten thousand times ten thousand' standing before God's throne. Jesus could have called 'more than twelve legions of angels' to His defense. Angels have a hierarchy of roles. Michael is the archangel, the chief defender of God's people. Gabriel is a messenger angel who announced the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. Cherubim guard the holiness of God — they were placed at the entrance to Eden and overshadowed the ark of the covenant. Seraphim worship around God's throne, crying 'Holy, holy, holy.' Angels perform many functions in Scripture. They bring messages from God, protect God's people, execute judgment, praise God, and learn from the gospel. They are 'ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.' Angels are not objects of worship. When John fell down to worship an angel in Revelation, the angel rebuked him: 'See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant... worship God.' They are fellow servants, not deities. Angels also serve as a warning against Satan and demons. Satan was a created angel who rebelled against God. A proper angelology recognizes the reality of both holy angels and fallen angels while keeping Christ central.
