What "What Happened at Pentecost?" Actually Means
Pentecost — fifty days after Christ's resurrection — is recorded in Acts 2. The disciples were gathered in one place when 'suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues' (Acts 2:2-4). Jews from many nations heard the gospel in their own languages. Peter preached a powerful sermon proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Christ, and about 3,000 people were baptized that day (Acts 2:41). Pentecost fulfilled Jesus' promise that the disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). It also fulfilled Joel's prophecy of the Spirit being poured out on all flesh (Joel 2:28-32). Pentecost marks the birthday of the church and the beginning of the Spirit-empowered mission to take the gospel to the ends of the earth.
