What "What Is the Judgment Seat of Christ?" Actually Means
Paul writes, 'We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad' (2 Corinthians 5:10). The Greek word 'bema' referred to the judge's platform at athletic games where winners received rewards. This is distinct from the Great White Throne judgment of unbelievers (Revelation 20:11-15). At the bema, works are tested: 'Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is' (1 Corinthians 3:13). Good works survive and are rewarded — 'he shall receive a reward' (3:14). Works of wood, hay, and stubble burn up — 'he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire' (3:15). Salvation is secure; rewards are variable. Crowns mentioned include the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8), crown of life (James 1:12), crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4), and incorruptible crown (1 Corinthians 9:25). This truth motivates faithful living — not from fear of hell, but from love for Christ and desire for His 'Well done.'
