The Biblical Context
The Exodus is the pivotal event of Old Testament history. After 400 years of slavery in Egypt (Genesis 15:13), God raised up Moses to lead His people to freedom. Through ten devastating plagues, God demonstrated His power over Egypt's gods (Exodus 7-12). The final plague — death of the firstborn — was averted for Israel through the blood of the Passover lamb. Pharaoh released Israel, but then pursued them to the Red Sea. God parted the waters, Israel crossed on dry ground, and the Egyptian army was destroyed (Exodus 14). In the wilderness, God provided manna (Exodus 16), water from a rock (Exodus 17), and His law at Sinai (Exodus 20). The Exodus became Israel's identity: 'I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt' (Exodus 20:2). It foreshadows spiritual salvation — Christ is our Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), believers pass through waters of baptism, and they journey toward the promised inheritance.
