Ephesians 5:21-33 provides the fullest teaching on marital roles, opening with the principle of mutual submission: 'submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.' Husbands are given the higher standard: 'love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it' (v.25). This is not domination but self-sacrifice — laying down one's life for the other. Wives are called to 'submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord' (v.22) — a voluntary response to loving leadership, not blind obedience. Colossians 3:19 adds, 'Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.' Peter instructs husbands to dwell with their wives 'according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life' (1 Peter 3:7). The Proverbs 31 woman is strong, industrious, wise, and honored. Biblical marriage is a partnership of equals in value with complementary roles, all pointing to Christ's relationship with His church.
