From the beginning, God designed marriage as a covenant union: 'Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh' (Genesis 2:24). Malachi 2:14 explicitly calls marriage a covenant, and God says, 'I hate putting away [divorce]' (Malachi 2:16). Ephesians 5:25-33 elevates marriage to a picture of Christ's sacrificial love for the Church. The husband is to love his wife 'as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.'
