The Biblical Context

The Bible uses the term 'fornication' (Greek: porneia) for sexual activity outside marriage, and it is consistently condemned. Paul wrote, 'Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body' (1 Corinthians 6:18). Hebrews 13:4 declares, 'Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and fornicators God will judge.' Paul counseled, 'To avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband' (1 Corinthians 7:2). Jesus affirmed God's design from creation: 'From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh' (Mark 10:6-8). The 'one flesh' union is designed for the covenant of marriage — a public, binding commitment. The Bible presents marriage not as a piece of paper but as a sacred covenant before God and community. Living together without that covenant lacks the security, commitment, and accountability God designed for intimate relationships.
