Family of Abraham — Father of the Faithful
Abraham fathered nations — Ishmael by Hagar, Isaac by Sarah, and six more sons by Keturah — and through Isaac came the promised seed.
God called Abram out of Ur (Genesis 12) with a promise: 'in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed' (12:3 KJV). From his three wives — Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah — came the Hebrew, Arab, and Midianite peoples. The covenant line, however, ran narrowly: through Isaac, the son of promise (Genesis 17:19).

Key KJV Scriptures
"And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."
"And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him."
"Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah."
"And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."
"Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of all them that believe;"
Why It Matters
Abraham's household is a living parable. Ishmael represents the flesh; Isaac represents the promise. Paul builds the doctrine of justification on this distinction (Galatians 4): God's people are not those born after the flesh but those born of the Spirit through faith in the seed, Christ.
Application for Today
Are you trying to fulfil God's promises with Hagar's methods — human effort and clever shortcuts? Wait for Isaac. The God who gave Sarah a son at ninety can fulfil what He has promised you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Abraham right to take Hagar?
No. Genesis 16 records it as Sarai's idea and Abram's compliance, not God's command. The consequences — strife, expulsion, and centuries of conflict between the descendants — show why waiting on God matters.
Who were the Midianites?
Descendants of Abraham through Keturah's son Midian. Moses married Zipporah, a Midianite (Exodus 2:21), but later generations led Israel into idolatry at Peor (Numbers 25), and Gideon defeated them (Judges 7).
Are Jews and Arabs really both from Abraham?
Yes, according to Genesis. Jews descend through Isaac and Jacob; Arab peoples trace heritage through Ishmael and Keturah's sons. Both communities revere Abraham as a father, though the covenant promise runs only through Isaac (Romans 9:7).
