Daughter-in-law of Judah and mother of Pharez — named in the genealogy of Christ.
Tamar (Genesis 38) is a Canaanite woman married into Judah's family. Wronged and forgotten, she took matters into her own hands and was vindicated as 'more righteous' than Judah himself. Matthew 1:3 names her in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Her Story
Tamar married Er, Judah's firstborn, who was wicked and slain by the LORD. Onan refused to raise up seed to his brother and was also slain. Judah promised his third son Shelah when he came of age, but withheld him. Years passed. When Judah went up to Timnath to shear sheep, Tamar disguised herself as a harlot by the wayside. Judah came in to her, leaving his signet, bracelets, and staff as pledge. Three months later she was found with child; Judah demanded her burning — until she produced the pledge. He confessed, 'She hath been more righteous than I' (Genesis 38:26). She bore twins, Pharez and Zarah, and Pharez became an ancestor of David and Christ.
