Genesis 38 interrupts the Joseph narrative to tell the story of Judah and Tamar. Judah separates from his brothers and marries a Canaanite woman, fathering three sons. After his first two sons die because of their wickedness, Judah withholds his third son from Tamar. Tamar disguises herself and conceives twins by Judah, who ultimately acknowledges her righteousness.
