Pilate's Wife
The Dreaming Witness
Wife of Pontius Pilate who warned him in a dream not to condemn Christ.
Matthew 27:19 records that as Pilate sat on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him: 'Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.'
Her Story
At the trial of Jesus, while the chief priests pressed for crucifixion, Pilate's wife interrupted the proceedings with a warning. She had suffered in a dream that very day. Pilate heard, washed his hands, and yet delivered Christ to be crucified. Her witness stands in the record forever.
What Scripture Teaches
- 1Wife of Pontius Pilate, Roman governor
- 2Warned Pilate by message during the trial (Matthew 27:19)
- 3Testified that Christ was a 'just man'
- 4Her warning unheeded — Pilate condemned Him still
Key KJV Scriptures
"When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him."
Why It Matters
Even a Gentile woman's troubled dream bore truer witness to Christ than the courts of Rome and Jerusalem.
Application for Today
Heed warnings. Conscience and counsel rejected for political peace become eternal regret.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Pilate's wife a believer?
Scripture does not say. Eastern tradition has venerated her as Claudia Procula, but the only certain thing is that God sent her a true message that her husband refused.
