Mary and Martha of Bethany
Sisters of Lazarus
The Bethany sisters who hosted Jesus, mourned Lazarus, and worshipped at the Lord's feet.
Luke 10, John 11, and John 12 give snapshots of two sisters in the village of Bethany whom Jesus loved (John 11:5). Martha served; Mary sat at the Lord's feet. Together they sent for Jesus when their brother Lazarus fell ill, and Jesus raised him from the dead.
Her Story
Luke 10 — Martha served, troubled and cumbered; Mary chose 'that good part.' John 11 — Lazarus died; Jesus came and wept; Martha confessed, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of God'; Mary fell at His feet weeping. He called Lazarus from the tomb. John 12 — Mary anointed Jesus' feet with costly spikenard, and the house was filled with the odour. Jesus said, 'against the day of my burying hath she kept this' (12:7).

Was Jesus rebuking Martha's service?
Not the service — the distraction. Luke 10:41-42 — 'thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful.' Service that crowds out sitting at His feet loses its source.
