Exposition
David encourages believers to throw their burdens onto God—He is able to carry what we cannot. God sustains His people and keeps them from falling.
Historical Setting
David wrote this psalm during a period of betrayal by a close friend, possibly Ahithophel, who sided with Absalom's rebellion. The pain of betrayal by an intimate companion intensified David's burden. His counsel to 'cast thy burden' came from personal experience of throwing himself on God's mercy during treachery.
Original Language Notes
'Yehav' (burden) appears only here in the Old Testament—it means what is given to you, your lot or portion. It's the weight of life that has been assigned to you. 'Cast' (shalakh) means to throw or hurl—an active, decisive throwing of your assigned burdens onto God.
Pastoral Application
You weren't designed to carry life's burdens alone. God invites you to cast your worries on Him. He will sustain you and keep you stable through every storm.
