Exposition
David prays for inner transformation after his sin with Bathsheba. He asks God to create—a word used for divine creative power—a pure heart and renewed spirit.
Historical Setting
David wrote this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah, around 990 BC. It is the most famous penitential psalm in Scripture. David didn't just ask for forgiveness—he asked for recreation, using the Hebrew word 'bara' (create), which is used exclusively for divine creative acts.
Original Language Notes
'Bara' means to create—used exclusively for God's creative activity in the Bible (never for human making). David asks God to do something only God can do: create from nothing a clean heart. Human effort cannot produce inner purity; it requires divine creation.
Pastoral Application
True repentance asks God for a new heart, not just forgiveness for old behavior. Pray for God to transform you from the inside out.
