The Plain Meaning
Paul instructs believers to replace anxiety with prayer. When we bring our concerns to God with thanksgiving, He guards our hearts with a peace that transcends human comprehension.
Word Study
'Merimnaō' means to be anxious, worried, or divided in mind—from 'merizō' (to divide). Anxiety literally 'divides the mind,' pulling attention away from God. Paul's remedy is prayer with thanksgiving—a united, God-focused mind that produces supernatural peace ('eirēnē').
Living It Out
The antidote to worry is prayer with thanksgiving. This doesn't mean our circumstances change, but our hearts are protected by God's supernatural peace as we trust Him.
