Exposition
This is the priestly blessing God gave to Aaron to bless Israel. It speaks of God's protection, favor, grace, attention, and peace.
Historical Setting
God gave this blessing to Aaron and his sons around 1446 BC at Mount Sinai. This is the oldest known biblical text—a silver scroll containing these words, dated to the 7th century BC, was found in a Jerusalem burial cave in 1979. The three-fold structure anticipates the Trinity, with each line progressively longer and more intimate.
Original Language Notes
'Barak' means to bless—to endow with power for success, prosperity, and fruitfulness. The priestly blessing moves from protection (keep) to favor (face shine) to grace to peace—a progression from external safety to internal wholeness. Each line adds depth to God's care.
Pastoral Application
This ancient blessing still speaks today. God desires to bless, protect, shine His favor, show grace, turn His attention toward you, and give you peace.
