Exposition
Nahum declares three truths: God is good, He is a refuge in trouble, and He knows His own. This knowledge is intimate and protective.
Historical Setting
Nahum prophesied around 663-612 BC against Nineveh, the capital of the brutal Assyrian Empire. While the book primarily announces judgment on Assyria, this verse is a tender aside to God's own people—assuring them that the same powerful God who judges the wicked protects those who trust Him.
Original Language Notes
'Ma'oz' means stronghold, fortress, or place of safety. From 'azaz' (to be strong), it describes a fortified refuge—the strongest defensive position available. God Himself is this stronghold, not a building or location but a Person who provides absolute security.
Pastoral Application
In troubled times, remember that God is good, He is your stronghold, and He knows you personally. Run to Him as your refuge.
