Exposition
In the midst of Jerusalem's destruction, Jeremiah finds hope in God's unfailing mercies. Each morning brings a fresh supply of God's compassion and faithfulness.
Historical Setting
Jeremiah wrote Lamentations around 586 BC after witnessing Jerusalem's complete destruction by Babylon—the temple burned, the walls demolished, the population massacred or deported. Standing amid the ruins of God's city, Jeremiah's declaration of God's faithfulness is remarkable testimony that hope can survive even total devastation.
Original Language Notes
'Chesed' means steadfast love, loyal kindness, or covenant faithfulness. It's one of the most important words in the Hebrew Bible, appearing 248 times. It describes God's committed, unshakable love that persists regardless of circumstances—the love that endures even through judgment.
