The Plain Meaning
Jesus prepares His disciples for hardship by honestly saying tribulation is guaranteed. Yet He offers hope: His victory over the world gives believers peace in the midst of trials.
Word Study
'Nenikēka' is the perfect tense of 'nikaō' (to conquer, overcome). The perfect tense indicates a completed action with ongoing results. Jesus speaks of His victory as already accomplished—before the cross even happens. His victory is so certain He declares it in the past tense.
Living It Out
Jesus doesn't promise a trouble-free life, but He promises peace within the trouble and ultimate victory. Because He has overcome, we can face anything with confident hope.
