Exposition
God outlines four conditions for national and spiritual healing: humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance. He promises to hear, forgive, and heal in response.
Historical Setting
God spoke these words to Solomon around 960 BC after the dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem. The magnificent temple had taken seven years to build. God appeared to Solomon at night, warning that even this glorious temple wouldn't protect Israel if they turned away—but also promising restoration through repentance.
Original Language Notes
'Kana' means to humble oneself, be subdued, or bring low. It's the first of four conditions for healing and describes the fundamental posture required—not casual prayer but genuine self-humbling before God. It's the opposite of the pride that leads to national sin.
Pastoral Application
Revival begins with personal responsibility—humbling yourself, praying earnestly, seeking God's face, and turning from sin. God's promise of healing follows genuine repentance.
