    2 Samuel 17 records the critical counsel of Ahithophel and Hushai to Absalom. Ahithophel advised immediate pursuit of David, but Hushai (David's spy) persuaded Absalom to wait and gather a massive army — giving David time to escape. When his counsel was rejected, Ahithophel went home and hanged himself.
