The Call of Samuel
A Boy Hears the Voice of God in the Night
Where to find this story in the Bible
The story of Call of Samuel is found in 1 Samuel 3:1-21 of the King James Bible (1 Samuel).
Books: 1 Samuel
Historical & Cultural Context
Samuel was born to Hannah after years of barrenness, dedicated to God before birth, and raised in the tabernacle at Shiloh under the priest Eli. This was a dark period in Israel's history — 'the word of the LORD was precious [rare] in those days; there was no open vision.' Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas were corrupt priests who exploited worshippers and committed immorality. Samuel was likely 12 years old when God first called him. His emergence as a prophet marked the transition from the period of the Judges to the monarchy.

The Boy in the Temple
Samuel was dedicated to the Lord by his mother Hannah even before his birth. As a young boy, he served in the tabernacle at Shiloh under the elderly priest Eli. In those days, the word of the Lord was rare, and there was no frequent vision. Eli's own sons were wicked, abusing their priestly office, but Samuel grew up faithful in the Lord's house.
God Calls in the Night
One night, as Samuel lay in the temple near the ark of God, the Lord called his name. Samuel ran to Eli, saying, 'Here am I; for thou calledst me.' But Eli had not called him and sent him back to bed. This happened three times. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy and instructed him to reply, 'Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.' When God called again, Samuel answered as Eli directed.
A Prophetic Word
The Lord revealed to Samuel a sobering message of judgment against Eli's house because of the iniquity of his sons, which Eli had failed to restrain. In the morning, Samuel was afraid to tell Eli, but the old priest urged him to hide nothing. Samuel faithfully reported everything. As Samuel grew, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. All Israel recognized Samuel as a prophet established by the Lord.
Symbolism & Typology
The Voice in the Night
God called Samuel by name, personally and directly. He calls in the quiet hours, when distractions are removed. Samuel's three times of mistaking God's voice for Eli's shows that learning to recognize God's voice is a process, not an instant skill.
'Speak, Lord; for Thy Servant Heareth'
Eli's instruction taught Samuel the posture of listening prayer — not 'Listen, Lord, for your servant speaks,' but the reverse. True prayer begins with listening. Availability precedes ability.
The Lamp of God
God called Samuel 'ere the lamp of God went out in the temple.' The lamp represents God's presence and truth. It was going out under Eli's watch — a new light was being kindled in Samuel. God always raises up new voices before the old light fully fades.
The Child Minister
God bypassed the established priesthood to speak through a child. Age, status, and credentials do not determine who God uses. He often chooses the young and inexperienced to shame the established and complacent.

God Calls the Young and Willing
Samuel was just a boy when God called him. Age and experience are not prerequisites for hearing from God — He looks for willing hearts that respond, 'Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.'
